The Adelaide Motorsport Festival is here!

AMF_Scruit 1400Any Given Reason has just returned from pre-event scruitineering at City Holden for this weekend’s Adelaide Motorsport Festival, and if the small snapshot of cars present at that time is anything to go by we’re in for quite the treat.

AMF_Scruit 1399This coming Saturday I will step out from behind the camera and put the helmet on, competing in the Windy Point Hillcimb in our Alfa Romeo Sprint. Friend of Any Given Reason Luke Jaksa will take the lens on Saturday, capturing the spirit of this first-time hillclimb for AGR. My father will be behind the wheel of the Alfa for Sunday’s Victoria Park Sprint, while I will be relegated to the sidelines behind the camera once again. But there will be Formula One cars roaring around the Victoria Park circuit as well as hundreds of other fine machines, so it’s hardly a tough job.

AMF_Scruit 1404Spectating is going to be pretty tricky up at Windy Point on Saturday, and my advice is to get there early to get a good spot at the lookout. You could try your luck trekking through the bushland but I understand they will be very hot on keeping people away for safety reasons, so be prepared to be turned back if this is your plan.

An Aladdin’s cave of Ferrari’s in Switzerland

LausanneFerrari 788I’ve discussed the concept of serendipity before on Any Given Reason, and the adventure and discovery to be found in being lost while traveling. The best things are always unexpected, and it pays to keep your eyes open to possibility no matter how discouraging your circumstances may seem.

LausanneFerrari 776Recently, I was traveling through the Swiss lakes on my Vespa with the unlikely goal of reaching the holiday town of Lausanne by nightfall. My tent had flooded the previous night in Italy which meant that all of my possessions except the clothes I was wearing were packed sodden in my bags, and I was lost. I had a ferry booked on the other side of France for a 4am Thursday morning Channel crossing which I had to make in order to not miss the Goodwood Revival Meeting; it was 6pm on Monday night and I still had close to 1000km of Switzerland and France to cover. The small 125cc capacity of my Vespa meant I couldn’t ride on the Autobahn, and whilst it was tempting to give it a crack anyway, I decided to play it safe and take the slower route through the towns.

LausanneFerrari 789Long story short, all of those circumstances sent me on an unexpected path that saw me ride past an Aladdin’s cave called Garage Zenith, and then discover another equally impressive workshop a little further on. I really didn’t have the time to justify stopping for a coffee let alone a walk around a car dealership, but when I saw Michael Schumacher’s own factory personalised Ferrari Enzo and a 1957 Maserati 250S sitting on the showroom floor, I just knew I had to stop. The 2013 Goodwood Revival

B_GRev 187Living the dream. An often over and sometimes ironically used phrase that seems to have lost its significance of late, and somewhat of an unreachable goal. I mean, very rarely does anyone actually get to live a dream. But I’ve just come back from the Goodwood Revival Meeting and as far as I can see, that entire event is a dream, and to attend it is to spend three short days living that dream down to its minutest detail.

B_GRev 009Sitting back now looking at these pictures on my dimly lit computer screen in suburban Adelaide, I have that kind of groggy, vague memory of this dream I’ve just awoken from. Was I really there, did that actually happen? It was set in the lush, green English countryside and everyone was dressed so nicely in tweed and frocks and they were all so friendly. There was champagne flowing and everyone was dancing to live swing music; the best classic cars driven by the most famous drivers were racing door handle to door handle; there was an airshow and a dogfight and there were priceless Ferrari’s dotted around the place. And then for some reason we were with Hillary and Tenzing at the summit of Mt Everest? At least, I think that’s what happened. Take me back!

A_GRevBMW 324Any Given Reason has been truly privileged to attend both Goodwood events in 2013; two events with completely different characters, despite being held only a stones throw from each other just outside Chichester in the South of England. If the Festival of Speed is the world’s biggest automotive garden party, then the Goodwood Revival is surely the worlds biggest automotive dress up party. Continue reading

A visit to Classic Throttle Shop

DSC_0178Any Given Reason was recently in Sydney on a flying weekend trip for decidedly non automotive purposes. However, with Sydney being the hotspot of Australian automotive culture it is, there were two iconic premises on the must visit list – Deus ex Machina and Classic Throttle Shop. I’ve already posted about Deus here, however I decided to save the best for last.

DSC_0112Classic Throttle Shop is quite simply the first and last word in premium classic cars from the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s. Spanning over two levels, CTS is the largest classic car showroom in Australasia. But it’s not just the size that sets CTS apart – it’s the sheer quality of their stock. Quite simply, every car for sale, be it original or restored, is a concourse winner. There’s no shaggy dog stories attached to any of these cars, they are the best of their respective types.

DSC_0148The other thing that sets CTS apart is the location. The showroom is actually in the Sydney Harbour Bridge structure in North Sydney.

DSC_0171This is the view from just a hundred meters up the road from the showroom. The location means CTS is easy to get to from the city – just catch a train from Circular Quay to the Milsons Point station, and walk a few minutes north.
